About Polyhedral Dice

Polyhedral dice are multi-sided dice used in tabletop role-playing games. The standard RPG dice set includes D4 (tetrahedron, 4-sided), D6 (cube, 6-sided), D8 (octahedron, 8-sided), D10 (pentagonal trapezohedron, 10-sided), D12 (dodecahedron, 12-sided), and D20 (icosahedron, 20-sided - the iconic die for D&D attack rolls and skill checks). Each die type serves specific purposes: D4 for small damage, D6 for standard effects, D8 for medium weapons, D10 for percentiles, D12 for high damage, and D20 for d20 system checks.

Dice Notation Guide

Format: [number]d[sides] - For example:

  • 3d6: Roll three 6-sided dice (ability scores, some damage)
  • 1d20: Roll one 20-sided die (D&D attack and skill checks)
  • 2d10: Roll two 10-sided dice (percentile or damage)
  • 8d6: Roll eight 6-sided dice (high-level fireball damage)

To use this notation: select the die type, enter the quantity, then click Roll.

Tips for Virtual Dice Rolling

  • Critical Hits: Double the dice quantity for critical damage. Regular 2d6 becomes 4d6 on crit.
  • Advantage/Disadvantage (D&D 5e): Roll 2d20, then manually choose higher (advantage) or lower (disadvantage).
  • Damage Calculation: Roll all dice of same type together (3d6), then add modifiers manually.
  • Roll History: Check recent rolls to verify results or share with your DM/players.
  • Custom Tables: Match die to table size - 30-entry table needs D30 custom die.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the dice rolls truly random?

Yes. We use the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure random number generator for all dice results. This provides true randomness with each value having equal probability, equivalent to or better than physical dice which can have manufacturing imperfections or rolling bias. Perfect for fair gameplay.

Can I roll different dice types together?

Currently, each roll uses one dice type. For mixed rolls (1d20 + 2d6), make separate rolls and add manually. Future versions may support mixed dice in single rolls.

What's the maximum number of dice?

Up to 20 dice of the same type per roll, covering virtually all game situations including massive spells (20d6 meteor swarm). For larger quantities, make multiple rolls.

Why use virtual dice instead of physical dice?

Always available (no lost dice), supports unusual sizes (D7, D30), instant totals, roll history, perfect randomness, ideal for online gaming, and you never run out of dice when casting 20d6 spells!

Do you save my roll history?

Roll history is temporary and stored only in your browser session. It clears when you close/refresh the page. Nothing saved to servers - your rolls are completely private.
